Stay Safe During the January Sales: Avoid Falling Victim to Online Scams

The January sales are a popular time for bargain hunters looking to save money on everything from clothing and tech to home goods. But while shoppers are busy hunting for deals, cyber criminals are just as busy finding ways to exploit the increased online shopping activity.

Following reports of millions lost to scams during previous sales events, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has warned consumers to stay vigilant against enhanced online threats during this high-risk period and avoid falling victim to online scams.

The Growing Threat of Online Shopping Scams

The January sales attract scammers who prey on shoppers eager to grab discounted products quickly. Common scams include fake websites offering heavily discounted goods, phishing emails impersonating trusted retailers, and counterfeit adverts on social media. Fraudsters use these tactics to trick shoppers into handing over personal details, payment information, or even downloading malicious software. Last year alone, online shoppers lost millions to scams during busy sales periods, demonstrating just how widespread these threats have become.

How to Spot Fake Websites and Deals

Scammers often set up convincing fake websites that mimic well-known retailers to trick customers into believing they are buying genuine products. These sites typically advertise "too good to be true" prices to lure shoppers in.

Before making a purchase:

  • Double-check the website address for small errors or unusual characters. Legitimate sites will use a secure connection, indicated by the padlock symbol and "https" in the web address.

  • Avoid clicking on links from unsolicited emails or social media ads. Go directly to the retailer’s website by typing the address into your browser.

  • Look for customer reviews and check the retailer’s contact details. If there’s no way to get in touch or the reviews seem suspicious, it’s likely a scam.

Watch Out for Phishing Emails and Texts

Phishing is one of the most common methods used by cyber criminals to steal personal and financial information. During the January sales, scammers may send emails or text messages claiming to offer exclusive deals, order confirmations, or delivery updates. These messages often contain links to fake websites designed to harvest your data.

  • Be cautious of emails or texts that create urgency, such as "limited-time offers" or "final chance to claim a discount."

  • Check for spelling errors, unusual sender addresses, or generic greetings like “Dear Customer.” Legitimate retailers usually personalise their communications.

  • Never click on suspicious links. Visit the retailer’s website directly to confirm any messages or orders.

Using Social Media with Caution

Social media platforms are a popular tool for scammers to promote fake sales or counterfeit products. Fraudulent adverts may look convincing, often featuring stolen images or logos from reputable brands.

If you come across a tempting deal:

  • Verify the retailer’s social media account. Look for a verified tick and check the account’s activity for signs of legitimacy.

  • Be cautious of links that redirect you to unfamiliar websites. Fraudsters use these links to gather your payment details or infect your device with malware.

  • Avoid sharing personal or payment information in response to adverts or direct messages.

How to Protect Yourself When Shopping Online

While the January sales are a great opportunity to save money, it’s important to shop securely and avoid falling victim to scams.

Here are some key tips to stay safe:

  • Use Secure Payment Methods: Pay with a credit card or secure payment services like PayPal, which offer greater protection against fraud. Avoid bank transfers, as these offer little recourse if something goes wrong.

  • Keep Software Updated: Ensure your devices and apps are up to date with the latest security updates. This helps protect against vulnerabilities that cyber criminals exploit.

  • Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Create secure passwords for online shopping accounts and avoid reusing them across multiple sites. A password manager can help you keep track of complex passwords.

  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Adding an extra layer of security to your accounts makes it harder for scammers to access them, even if they obtain your password.

  • Check Your Bank Statements: Regularly monitor your accounts for any unauthorised transactions. If you spot anything suspicious, report it to your bank immediately.

What to Do If You Fall Victim to a Scam

If you believe you’ve been scammed while shopping online, take action quickly:

  • Contact Your Bank: Report any unauthorised transactions immediately to your bank or credit card provider. They may be able to stop payments or refund your money.

  • Report the Scam: Report any incidents to Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud and cybercrime reporting centre. This helps authorities track and combat online scams.

  • Change Your Passwords: If you suspect your account details have been compromised, update your passwords as soon as possible.

Shop Smart and Stay Secure This January

The January sales can be a fantastic opportunity to find great deals, but it’s also a time when scammers are out in full force. By staying cautious, verifying websites and communications, and following best practices for online security, you can enjoy a safe and stress-free shopping experience.

Stay safe, and happy shopping!
